Skaion Reprises Role in AFRL "Hackfest" Exercises

NORTH CHELMSFORD, Ma. - Sep. 14, 2005 - Skaion took part in the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's "Hackfest" exercises this past summer for a second year, providing technology to create the simulated network environment that information assurance students used as a "cyber battleground."

Students of AFRL's Advanced Course in Engineering (ACE) summer Cyber Security Boot Camp engaged in the national cyber security exercise, which pitted student teams against each other in a four-way capture the flag, which teams acting both as red and blue teams on four protected enclaves.

As with the 2004 exercise, Skaion's Traffic Generation System (TGS) was employed to provide a rich network landscape, enlarging the field of play and enhancing realism.

About the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) was formed in October 1997 from an organizational consolidation of four former Air Force laboratories (Armstrong, Phillips, Rome, and Wright) and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). AFRL's goal is to create a more efficient, effective organization to support the Air Force's global engagement vision. Its mission is to discover, integrate and deliver affordable technologies for improved warfighting by leading a partnership of government, industry, and academia.

The laboratory is responsible for the Air Force's annual $1.2 billion science and technology program, including the full spectrum of Air Force basic research, exploratory development, and advanced development. Overall, the lab is responsible for planning basic research to ensure continued technological superiority; developing and transitioning new technologies for Air Force weapon systems and their supporting infrastructure, and ensuring responsive technical support for urgent problems whenever and wherever they occur.
